Athletics Eligibility Requirements
Middle School Athletics - Philosophy

The purpose of middle school athletics is to promote sportsmanship and fair play while enabling our student athletes to gain experience in selected sports.  Middle school athletics play a vital role in the total educational program when they are effectively planned, organzied, administered, supervised, and evaluated.  Through school athletics many of the interests and needs of our young people can be served.  The Wythe County Public Schools Middle School Athletics Program will sponsor the following sports:  football, baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, cheerleading, boys' and girls' basketball, boys' and girls' track, cross country, wrestling, and golf.  Student participation determines if a team makes.  Middle school students who plan to participate in any school sponsored athletic program must meet the following academic requirements to be eligible.

Sixth grade students may only particpate in a sport not offered by the community recreation departments.  To be eligible, students must have passed 5 eligibility credits for the first semester of 6th grade.

Seventh grade students must have passed 5 eligibility credits for sixth grade end of year grades to particpate in fall and winter sports, and the same for the 1st semester of 7th grade to participate in spring sports (and continue winter).

Eighth grade students must have passed 5 eligibility credits for 7th grade end of year grades to participate in fall and winter sports, and the same for the 1st semester of 8th grade to participate in spring (and continue winter).

All students must have a VHSL physical dated after May 1, 2017 and a signed concussion form submitted to SMMS prior to tryouts or participation in any middle school sport or club for the 2017-2018 school year.

Team membership is both an honor and a responsibility.  Proper conduct, as outlined in the Wythe County Student Code of Conduct, is expected at all times, both on and off the field of play.  We pride ourselves on good sportsmanship and display the highest level of conduct.
